A 24-year-old man has been airlifted to hospital after his ATV struck a tree near Athens, Ont.

The Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a serious collision involving a single vehicle-occupant shortly before 4 p.m. on Monday.

The crash ejected the driver from the side-by-side and he was found with life-altering injuries. He was airlifted by Air Ornge to Kingston where he remains in hospital. The severity of the injuries has not been confirmed, says Provincial Constable Joey Mason.

Police have not yet determined what caused the collision, says Mason. The ATV is currently being examined by officials.

OPP Collision Reconstructionists and members of the Traffic Collision Investigation Team are assisting Leeds OPP in the investigation. The area reopened to the public on Tuesday.

Police are asking that witnesses, or those who have home surveillance or dash cam footage of the incident contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-900-222-8477 or leave a tip online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
